글라스고 COP26에서 녹색 물결을 만나다 (Green waves from Glasgow COP26)

안녕하세요. 영국 런던에 거주 중인 최미연 당원입니다. 지난 11월 6일 글라스고에서 열린 COP26 ‘기후 정의를 위한 세계 공동 행동(Global Day of Action for Climate Justice)’에 한국 녹색당을 대표하여 특파원으로 다녀왔습니다. 당일치기로 왕복 12시간 기차 행을 강행하는, 다소 고된 일정이었습니다만.. 그 곳에서 만난 세계 곳곳의 녹색당 당원들과의 조우에서 온 감흥은 너무나 강렬했습니다. 17Km 행진을 마치고도 기차역에서 집까지 1시간 반 도보하는 것으로 넘치는 기운을 감당해야 했을 정도였으니까요.

Hello, I am Miyeon Choi a member of Green party Korea living in London, UK. I participated in ‘Global Day of Action for Climate Justice at the COP26 held in Glasgow on November 6th as a correspondent on behalf of Green party Korea. It was quite a tough schedule making a 12hour round trip train for one day. But the excitement I got from the other green party members from all over the world was so strong. Even after 17Km march, I had to take a walk home an hour and a half from the station with overflowing energy.

런던 집에서 새벽 4시에 나서 첫 기차를 타고 가는데 기내의 모두가 행진에 가는 모양이었습니다. 제 피켓을 보는 이들마다 반가워하며 본인들도 그 곳에 간다고 말해주었기 때문이죠. 그들에게서 느껴지는 흥분감에 마치 락페스티벌 혹은 성지 순례를 가는 양 ‘대장정’이 시작되는 구나!하는 인상을 받았습니다.

I left my home at 4 am to take the first train after sleeping for 2hours only. And facing the scene of the crowd in the train with some kind of excitement made it look like a journey to Jerusalem or the Woodstock rock festival. Because they told me they were also heading where I am about to. Showing the thumbs up to my banner which is written as ’Stop, Climate change, Yes, Climate justice!’

글라스고 센트럴 역에 내려 무리를 따라가다가 한 가족에게 행진이 시작 될 켈빈그로브 공원 위치를 물어보니 동행하자며 흔쾌히 반겨주십니다. 비장한 마음으로 화장실에 가 옷매무새를 만지고, 안경을 닦고 역을 나섰지만.. 휘몰아치는 비바람에 곧바로 좀전의 의식은 소용 없는 일이 되버렸습니다. 글라스고에 산다는 동행에게 이게 일반적인 날씨냐고 물으니 그렇다고 하며 밝게 웃어 보여 잠시 말을 잃었습니다. 걷는 내내 도통 앞을 볼 수가 없어 아니 그럼 여기 사람들은 방수 안경이라도 쓴단 말이야?라고 한 번 더 묻자 그건 아니라는 답이 돌아옵니다.

I took off at Glasgow central station after a 6hours long journey. Following the crowds, I happened to stop in front of a guy with a lovely dog and ask the direction of Kelvin grove park where the march would begin. And their family gladly asked me to join. I went to the bathroom to tidy myself and wipe the glasses to be ready for the march with determination. But as soon as I leave the station, the previous ritual became useless thanks to raging rain and wind pouring at my face. I asked the family if this is normal weather in Glasgow. And she said yes with a bright smile which made me lose a word for a while. While walking I literally couldn’t see the view because of the water pouring from the up sky. This time, I asked them ‘do people living in Glasgow wear some kinds of waterproof glasses?’ And they chuckled which didn’t help me to feel better or understand.

동화 <피리 부는 사나이>처럼 자연스레 공원으로 가는 길에 방향을 묻는 이들이 하나 둘 따라 붙어 한 무리를 만들게 되었습니다. 이집트에서 온 기후 운동가를 비롯해 여럿이 한참 수다를 떨며 30분을 걸으니 ‘성지’에 모여 든 인파가 모습을 드러냅니다.

Like the fairytale <The piper>, people who asked for the direction on the way to the park naturally joined together and foamed a group. After a 30minutes walk, including a climate activist from Egypt, a group of people chatted for a while in the rain and we reached the ‘Holy land’ with crowds finally.

각양각색의 피켓과 옷차림을 한 군중 속에서 한국실천단으로 함께 일정을 소화 할 정의당, 변혁당, 민주노총 참가자들을 찾아 헤멨습니다. 그러다 우연히 정의당에서 유투브 현장 중계를 촬영하시던 현장을 마주쳐 깜짝 출연과 함께 반가운 인사를 나누게 됩니다. 너무나 오랜만에 만난 한국인에 익숙한 얼굴을 뵌 나머지 저조차도 당황스러운 흥분을 쏟아냈습니다. (영상 참조..)

After saying goodbye to the groups, I had to find the participants from Korea who will be carrying out today’s schedule together. And then by a sudden, I ran into a scene where the Justice party was doing a Live Youtube Broadcast. Since I’ve met when Minjin Kang was a spokesperson for last year’s election, as soon as I face a familiar Korean I haven’t seen in a long time, I exploded with a grand welcome which even made me feel rather embarrassed. 행진에 앞서 글라스고의 공원에서 높이 펄럭이는, 눈에 익은 민주노총 깃발을 보고 있자니 기분이 묘했습니다. 1시간 가량 서서 기다리는 동안 녹색당 유투브 생방송으로 현장의 분위기를 잠시 전달하고 본격 행진을 합니다. 폭우와 햇빛이 함께 쏟아져 내리는 낯선 풍경 아래 4시간 시내를 돌았는데요. 자유롭고도 축제 같은 분위기였지만 어떤 간절함의 기운이 감지되었습니다. 이는 영국이 1년 반 동안 락다운(격리) 생활을 한 이후 처음으로 이렇게 많은 인파가 쏟아져 나온 것이 첫째 그리고 그 생활을 경험하며 정말 이렇게는 더 살 수 없겠다며 기후 위기의 심각성을 마주했기 때문일 것입니다.

It felt quite strange to see the familiar KCTU (Korean Confederation of trade unions)’s flag fluttering high in a park in Glasgow before the march. While waiting for about an hour, I did a Live Youtube Broadcast from Green Party Korea’s channel to deliver the atmosphere of the scene briefly. We wandered around the city for nearly 4 hours under an unfamiliar landscape of rain and sunlight pouring down at the same time. It was a free and festive atmosphere, but we also could sense the eagerness to change. This is probably because it was the first time with such a large number of people gathered since a year and a half of lockdown. I am sure that it brought them to face the seriousness of the climate crisis which they can’t live on like this.

행진을 하던 중 녹색 깃발과 옷차림을 한 무리를 보고 혹시! 혹시!하며 다가가니 ‘Greens(그린즈)’ 피켓이 보였습니다. 다시 또 흥분한 저는 백 여명의 녹색당원들 무리 앞으로 뛰어가 피켓을 흔들며 ‘저 한국 녹색당에서 왔어요!!!!!’라고 소리를 칩니다. 피켓을 읽고 상황이 파악되자 대번에 녹색 물결의 인파들이 저를 반기며 이리 오라고 손짓을 하는데 그 순간의 장면은 정말이지.. 마치 ‘약속의 땅’에 도착한 영화의 한 장면 같았습니다. (영화 ‘매드맥스 : 분노의 도로’를 참고해주세요.) 개개인의 결은 다를지언정 ‘전환의 씨앗’을 믿는 이들을 먼 곳 타지에서 만나는 경험은 매우 굉장했습니다. 코로나로 국가 간의 이동을 비롯해 많은 것들이 제한 되어 온 상황이기에 ‘연결’된다는 것, ‘연대’한다는 것만이 이 위기를 함께 돌파할 수 있는 힘이겠구나를 다시 생각하게 만들었습니다.

As we were marching, I discovered a group of people holding green flags. The excitement was already out of control so that I ran into the group shouting ‘I am from Green Party Korea!!’. And then as soon as the group of people read my banner and realise what was going on, the green waves greeted me and beckoned me to come. That scene was like… me arriving at ‘Promised Land’ from the movie <Mad max: Fury Road>. Even though each person’s texture and the way they deal with this crisis, meeting people who believe in the ’Seed of transformation’ in a distant country was truly amazing. Especially since the covid, including movement between countries, many things were restricted and isolated. It made me think of the idea of ‘being connected’. And I assure the ‘connection’ and ‘solidarity’ would be the power to overcome this crisis together.

행진을 마친 후 글라스고 그린 공원에 우후죽순 무리들이 모였습니다. 한국 집회에서 대형 무대와 음향 시설을 갖추고 결기에 차 발언을 하는 풍경과는 사뭇 다른 모습이었는데요. 누군가는 랩을 하고 누군가는 발언을 하고 또 노래를 하지만 그것이야말로 ‘광장’의 기능이 아닌가하는 생각이 들었습니다. 마치 지역 라디오처럼 늘 누군가의 목소리가 떠도는 것이 한국에서처럼 순간적인 밀도를 주지는 않지만 누구나 발언의 주체가 될 수 있는 분위기를 만드는 듯 했습니다.

After marching, people gathered in ‘Green park’. The scenery was quite different from the scene we had in Korea with massive stage and sound facilities, people giving speeches in a highly determined mood. There were people doing rap, speech, and singing. And I thought this is exactly what ’square’ is for. The voices floating in the air were like a local radio broadcast and it didn’t seem to attract people intensely as Korea’s march culture. But it was more like ‘anyone’ can be the subject of the speech.

곳곳에서 또 다른 녹색 깃발들을 발견한 저는 4시간 행진의 피로도 잊은 채 마구 쏘다니기 시작합니다. 지난 3개월 간 연고 없는 새로운 국가, 도시에서 다소 고립되어 있었던 마음이 ‘녹색’ 앞에서 마구 활개를 친 것이죠. 스코틀랜드, 캐나다 당원들과 한데 모여 이야기를 나누다보니 그 중 두 사람이 현 스코틀랜드의 하원의원임을 나중에 알게 되었습니다. 그리고는 내년 선거에서 한국에도 녹색당이 의석을 꿰차고 들어가 기후정의를 이야기 하는 모습을 상상해보며 다음 언젠가의 만남에서는 반갑고 기쁜 소식들을 전해 주고 말겠다는 혼자만의 다짐을 했고요!

Discovering the other green flags from all over the park, I kept wandering around forgetting the fatigue from 4hours marching. For the past 3 months, my heart which had been somewhat isolated in a new country and city, without any connection released in front of ‘greens’. after chatting with some of Green Party members, I got to know two of them from Scotland were MPs. And it made me imagine how happy it would be delivering the news about Green Party Korea getting into the assembly talking about climate justice from next year’s election.

| I asked to take a picture of us together with members from Scotland and Canada’s Green Party. When someone said ‘Cheese’ I rapidly said back ‘(Perhaps) VEGAN CHEESE?’ And their laugh just remained in the picture.

날씨와 개인 일정으로 반나절 가량의 짧은 시간 특파원 일정을 마무리해야했는데요. 더 많은 활동을 전해드릴 수 없는 안타까움 이전에 ‘연결’된다는 것의 힘이 어떤 것인가를 함께 나누고 이야기하고 싶습니다. 우후죽순 곳곳에서 솟아나는 풀뿌리 정치의 모습을 저도 이 곳 런던 지역당에서 그리며 또 한국 녹색당에 소식을 전하도록 할게요. 이 글을 읽어주신 모든 분들의 평안을 기원하며 런던에서 면 당원 드림

It was a very short journey due to the weather and my schedule. But I would like to talk about the awareness of power from ‘being connected’ rather than being sorry that I can’t share more activities from here. I will be delivering another scene of grass-roots politics from London to Korea. I wish everyone’s peace who read these stories.
